About the role

Technicians are responsible for performing a variety of healthcare duties to increase efficiency while focusing on patient care and client care. The technician is routinely entrusted with patient assessments, anesthesia, procedures, and treatments. The technician must be a detail oriented person who can make good decisions, respond quickly and calmly to crises, and maintain high standards of patient care. Technicians need to communicate clearly with the doctor's, other hospital personnel, and clients to ensure that patients receive the care that they need.

Technicians provide training, supervision, and leadership for other members of the pet health care team. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to set a good example, promote a positive work environment, and provide direction and motivation to co-workers are important aspects of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate patient care, with attention to detail, including keeping patients clean, dry, and comfortable and alerting doctor to changes in patients condition.
  • Treat clients with respect, compassion and empathy - this is a pillar of our guiding principles.
  • Recognize patients with contagious disease and follow our procedure. Provide safe and effective patient restraint.
  • Ability to medicate patients.
  • Ability to collect lab samples (blood, urine, cytology), and run appropriate tests (skin and ear cytologies, fecal float and smear, urinalysis, manual platelet count).
  • Ability to place IV catheters and maintain appropriate fluid therapy. Pharmacology - familiar with drugs and their uses and ability to calculate drug dosages and fill prescriptions accurately.
  • Radiology - Use proper technique and positioning.
  • Surgery/Anesthesia/Dentistry - ability to monitor anesthesia and assist doctor as assigned.
  • Communicate and educate clients on pet's health needs.
  • Perform basic emergency care, CPR, and intensive care as needed.
  • Efficiently manage the appointment schedule, making sure that the patient and client's needs are met, and provide follow up communications.
  • Schedule next appointment or recheck for all patients.
  • Accurately invoice clients for services and assure reminders are set correctly every visit.
  • Complete medical records accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to admit and release patients for all hospital procedures and have paperwork filled out appropriately.
  • Utilize in house inventory procedures to ensure items are stocked appropriately. Generate accurate treatments plans and be able to communicate their value to clients.
  • Attend departmental and staff meetings.
  • Understand and communicate payment policies with clients.
  • Answer phones when Reception needs help, as needed.

Education

Completion of high school degree required.

Skills

  • Must be able to lift objects weighing 40 lbs or ask for assistance if over 40 lbs.
  • Must be able to work energetically for entire shift, sometimes exceeding 8 hours per day. Shift does not end until all duties are completed.
  • Veterinary technician experience required.
  • LVT certification desired but not required.
  • Bi-lingual desired but not required.
